About Growers Insight

Two AgTech veterans, Danny Royer and Aaron Magenheim worked together for over a year to build, test, and refine a new approach to helping food companies and farmers through their innovation journey before forming Growers Insight LLC in early 2020. With thousands of new technologies inundating the Ag sector, our business operations assessment provides a unique look into operations and paves the way to increased productivity, profits, and sustainability.

Farm Strategic Planning

Pioneering Agriculture

Coming from the Ag industry in California, Aaron and Danny have pioneered the integration of Ag and tech throughout hundreds of farming and food operations in the US and around the world for over a decade.

Despite the availability of improved technologies, we have observed low adoption rates in the past and often times have a hard time finding a clear Return on Investment for innovation endeavors. We saw that typically only 10-20% of the potential of current technologies were being utilized and knew this had to change in order to really help our industry. We thought back to our first days working with a new company and what questions we would ask to skip past a majority of the lessons we often learned the hard way. We combined this with all of our experiences and processes and to offer insight, assessment, strategy and implementation services using their assessment as a cornerstone for success.

We also provide additional support through implementation phases to further ensure success.

Danny was born and raised in Merced, California. Merced is located in the heart of California’s Central Valley and is surrounded by production agriculture. Not having family ties to agriculture though, Danny found his passion for farming and agriculture through 4-H, FFA and on his best friends farm just outside of Merced. He started his career in farming by irrigating Pistachios in Madera at 16 and eventually found himself working summers on a construction crew for Merced Irrigation District.

After High School Danny took his passion for Agriculture to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. While he was there he continued to focus on broadening his work experience by taking on jobs at the Cal Poly Foundation Dairy and the Cal Poly Farm Shop. Danny Graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 2008 with a degree in Agriculture Systems Management and minor in Agriculture Business.

Cal Poly had prepared him for after graduation, but Danny attributes his summer internships and combined work experiences to preparing him for the grind that would become the next eight years of his career. After graduating Danny worked in management and leadership positions for some of the largest farms and food production companies in California. After years of operational roles Danny transitioned into a new role as the VP of Technology for world renowned Bowels Farming Company. It was AgTech that allowed Danny to start driving change in operations and redefining company cultures. Danny’s vast and extensive Agriculture Operations experience combined with the onslaught of AgTech allowed him to shift his strategy to incorporate AgTech solutions. After years of implementations and improvement iterations though, Danny was ready for something more.

Today as COO at Growers Insight, Danny builds systems to evaluate the current state of farm and food production operations. From those evaluations the systems are designed to create custom strategies and plans that incorporate technology and achieve leaderships short- and long-term goals and objectives.

Along with being a serial Agriculturalist and Technologist Danny is an active member in his Community of Merced. He serves as the Chairman of the Board for the Community Foundation of Merced County and actively engages in community events and initiatives. Lastly and definitely most importantly to Danny, he is very much a family man. Danny has an amazing wife, who aside from being an awesome mother, is a stellar Real Estate Agent building her own business. Danny also has three amazing children that are the motivation for everything he does. Riley 12, Kate 4, and Rhett  2 are the light of his life and his mission to create sustainable food systems is driven by a desire to see a more balanced and sustainable world for his children.

My dad and I operate a family farm of about 14,500 acres near Streator, Illinois. We primarily grow corn and soybeans as well some alfalfa. Along with operating machinery, I primarily focus on managing the farm’s logistics, finances and landowner relations. I also focus on the introduction and execution of using the latest technologies in our operations including WISRAN, John Deere Operations Center, Granular, Encirca, Asana, and Google Drive.

Outside of Durdan Farms, I was the President of Illinois Corn Growers Association from 2016 to 2017 and also served on the board for five years prior. Also at ICGA, I am a member of the Stewardship Action Committee. I am also a co-founder of an agriculture-technology software startup based in California, which focuses on operational efficiency. I joined the company, WISRAN, in 2016 and have traveled throughout the U.S. and Australia gaining first-hand knowledge of farming operations of different areas and actively advising on the benefits of technology to assist overall operations.

What is agriculture technology?

Modern farms and agricultural operations work far differently than those a few decades ago, primarily because of advancements in technology, including sensors, devices, machines, and information technology. Today’s agriculture routinely uses sophisticated technologies such as robots, temperature and moisture sensors, aerial images, and GPS technology. These advanced devices and precision agriculture and robotic systems allow businesses to be more profitable, efficient, safer, and more environmentally friendly,

Farmers no longer have to apply water, fertilizers, and pesticides uniformly across entire fields. Instead, they can use the minimum quantities required and target very specific areas, or even treat individual plants differently. Benefits include:

  • Higher crop productivity

  • Decreased  use of water, fertilizer, and pesticides, which in turn keeps food prices down

  • Reduced impact on natural ecosystems

  • Less runoff of chemicals into rivers and groundwater

  • Increased worker safety

In addition, robotic technologies enable more reliable monitoring and management of natural resources, such as air and water quality. It also gives producers greater control over plant and animal production, processing, distribution, and storage, which results in:

  • Greater efficiencies and lower prices

  • Safer growing conditions and safer foods

  • Reduced environmental and ecological impact
